MOTORCYCLE
will this heart thaw?
twine laced stitched heart
beats faster hoarse
river’s pace ice in veins
old man king crowned
motorcycle his love
roots and crowns decay
boxes dust and plaque ice in veins
so we soldier on
can you not hear
the cull of open air
can you not hear
when the voices sing in your ear of love
will this heart thaw?
twine laced stitched heart
old man king crowned
motorcycle his love
will this heart thaw
is it too late.

I AM NO MATCH FOR GREATER MINDS
seven miles split
up the middle sew the seam a little cleaner
than the Vivian girls did
stitches all unfolding and the belly will breathe open bursting
into the fields
the soldiers fell in grass that wasn’t even high enough to keep
their shoulders slung below the lines
where bullets fly and paper birds are busy singing miseries
eye were held high
marching in step
canvas grass fields
are wide enough to see
through billows of smoke and powder debris
the other charge was lining up along the river
shining up their buttons and brass,
our drums are busy beating rattlesnakes to keep our lady free and southernly,
bastards of the north elevate their bayonets and
brandish jagged cutlery to set our courage
running like ink
wet on paper
orders came so we
charged into the fray
I am no match
for greater minds
scissors and solitude
child head whiplash
feeble minded they say
these catholic ways of
charity
are lost in silent
sweeping of floors
continents of ink and traced beauty
many lives were lost that day
in service of our seven sisters child headed whiplash
victory depends on
watercolor blood spilled on page after page
dusty windowsills tell a tale that will never see the light of day

WHIMSY SHUDDER SHINE
got all day to waste away
my hands are tied to fence post of delay
let my time slide like dimes
down the craw of a rainy day jar
step on nails drinking of bottles of dust
blood pools at my feet and my joint are filled with rust
a stitch in my line might cost me a dime
by three I might catch my speed to carry on
shades pulled all day
pills and bottles obey
the neon suntan of the television screen
tin cups and twine cold wood less than a dime
I know I’ve got to move to carry on
pull this weight from this lazy seat
locked my self inside of doors from these days of deceit
whimsy shudder shine cold wood less than a dime
by three I might catch my speed to carry on
I can’t even feel the weather
this pine box sofa robs me clever
step on nails to catch attention
a mind like this might never leave a running television television
boxes of lint paths cut through the trash
a life time lived on top of floors and we carry on
pale blues eyes rot away like flies
my circles fade and cave away with every cavity

CONTENDER
save save all your dimes
save for a day when
still sticky and sweet
sweat from your back pays won’t pay
may maybe he’ll fall
drunken capsize in the tenth round
you swing your fists in
blind wide circles
bright lights show the trickle
above your temple
you’re going down
everyone sees you
you’re naked in spectacle glory
content to be legend for one day
seeth seeth through your teeth
grin and take every
hit hit on your chin
turn the the other cheek
bruise bruised break the skin
scars show that you were there
tell your children
you were a contender
now its back to work and slowly sink into heart attack
one moment in lights eternal
your name was on the big lights and tourniquet
severed off
ten seconds is everything

TORNADO SONG
we have seen weave through trees
the twister breathes prairie heaves
scrape knees sweetly
running through weeds
prairie grass spreads its seeds
on fox tails chased in children’s dreams
leap so graceful
dry dust becomes air
bare feet pound chalk dry ground
sober sting in the swarm of bees
wind gouged this plain
against everything it is grey

THE WATER STREET WALTZ
we are plain
through dusty eyes we see things all the same
we march on bended knees
and swing our arms freely
it doesn’t matter much
I’m just passing through this place
I went down to the water to sink my head underneath
silt swim by, times are hard to tell
Barstow fell on top of me
we leave no trace
we leave no trace of our being here
put me in a box
high on a shelf with cottonballs
while it all slips to parts
slips to piecemeal
this river carves through town
and hallowed ground
I think I found myself
down to follow god
our minds are made up
to make up nothing much
ever happens
so unheard in this town

SUNLIGHT THROUGH EYELIDS
all I can see
is sunlight through eyelids
drenched over me
all I can see
is silence sweet silence
fingers traced in me
only the silence
needed to be said
say the words
she’ll breathe them in
this search for blindnesn
hearts traced by
fingers lock
its only skin
the lies we said were true
follow me down
follow me down
silence is all we know
silences in all she knows
sink and swim and drown in it
thinking is it really happening
dive your head underneath concrete
sink your head underneath
what does it mean
let the air escape your lungs
breath deep
the weight of her body pressing down

GASLIGHT CATARACT
got ashes in my teeth splinters six miles deep
tin man strong and I walked my miles alone
nails black as night hair pale turned white
the right hand of god don’t give them no right
wood planks at the company store sing my name known
every time I set foot they take everything I own
rib cage collapses my car untangles it’s threads
every time my life slips I s see numbers in my head
every kind of evil every kind of wrong
means one more trip in this god damned hole
lord what you done to me
I might just bleed black if this dust would let me be
it might just be my fault if heaven please
lord ain’t give me nothing save for a back to break in this heat
my fingers is strong tendon pulled like tight twine
and my day is long my bloodstream’s filled with coal
back arched spine coughed wood stained with black grain
is all I can see through this gaslight cataract
you held me together wood bones and paraffin wax
put my hopes in a box sealed by this coal dust heart attack
rail car pulls up to sun down past arms chain linked under ground
my day ain’t my own I live on lease
means one more day in this god damned hole
lord what you done to me
might just bleed black if this dust will let me be
might just be my fault if heaven do please

AVENUES ALL LINED WITH TREES
I’ve fallen down
stairs in the afternoon
in between sun and sky
avenues all lined with trees
although we know
silently from time to time
a thousand cuts fall
and march through these veins towards a beating heart
all of these things are waiting on the brink of my teeth
clenched jaw falling at the length of my tongue as words stall
I’ve fallen down
stairs in the afternoon
in between sun and sky
avenues all lined with trees
all of these things are waiting on the edge of my teeth
clenched jaw falling at the length of my tongue as words stall
how many times have we said silently that…
